Siri AI stops at the iPhone 15 Pro while iOS 27 reaches back to the 11

An employee on an iPhone 14 and her manager on an iPhone 17 Pro both install iOS 27 on Monday and land on the same OS version, but not the same Siri. She asks Siri to find a song a colleague texted her in July and gets the Siri she had on Sunday [4]. Her manager asks the same thing and has to reach the top of a waiting list before the new assistant will answer [12].

That is the shape of this release for whoever has to support it: one version number, three feature tiers [16]. Everything from an iPhone 11 up gets faster photo loading and a more reliable AirDrop, with battery life that BGR reports Apple saying could improve [6]. Siri AI and the improved Apple Intelligence models start at iPhone 15 Pro [4]. The new Siri voices and customization options start higher still, at iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone Air [5].

App compatibility is the smallest part of the bill. The two published device lists do not even agree at the top, with PCMag naming an iPhone 18 Pro and an iPhone Duo among supported models [8] where Cult of Mac's list stops at the 17 Pro and adds a 17e [9]. They agree on the floor, which BGR puts at the iPhone 11 [3], so the disagreement is confined to hardware nobody's fleet owns yet. The retirements are elsewhere: Cult of Mac reports watchOS 27 supporting only the Series 9, the third-generation SE and the Ultra 2 [14], and iPadOS 27 dropping several older models [13].

The Apple Intelligence column is where a September plan quietly loses its date. BGR reports a separate October update, most likely iOS 27.1, adding French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese and Spanish, with the timeline for the remaining Apple Intelligence languages still unclear [17]. Count from September 14 to the first day of October and you get 17 days as the floor before any non-English deployment can begin [23]. None of the three reports gives the length of the waiting list [12]. On other hardware the gate is silicon: Cult of Mac says the new iPad features need an M4 with 12GB or more of memory [18], and the strongest on-device Mac model needs an M3 or newer with 12GB or more of RAM [19].

The work sorts into four cells by two questions: does it have a date, and does it run on hardware users already carry. Dated and carried covers app compatibility and the performance changes, and the release candidate has been available since September 9 [2] with public beta devices being moved to the same build that ships [10], so that testing can close this week. What the evidence actually supports is a shipping OS on a known date, with the assistant itself gated behind a beta, a hardware tier and a queue position. The honest September deliverable for most of the fleet is a phone that loads photos faster [6].

What to watch

  • A general availability date for Siri AI would turn the Apple Intelligence line of a September plan into something a team can commit to.
  • Any movement in Apple's DMA dispute with the European Commission decides whether EU iPhone users ever get the new Siri on the phone itself.
