Meta tethers its VR glasses to a pocket puck to reach 100 grams

Sensors and screens ride on the face at about 100 grams while the compute clips to a pocket. Meta says the display is good for reading text, and it will sell the glasses for $1,300 in spring 2027.

What happened

  • Mark Zuckerberg showed Meta VR Glasses at the company's developers' conference on Wednesday, and Business Insider reports they go on sale in spring 2027 for $1,300, a third of the Apple Vision Pro's starting price.
  • The frames carry the sensors and display at about 100 grams, while a puck on an optical tether carries compute, battery and storage and clips to a pocket or bag.
  • Meta specifies a 5K micro-OLED display at 37 pixels per degree through custom pancake lenses, calls it great for text legibility, and says the device runs on Qualcomm's new Snapdragon Reality Elite.
  • Business Insider's reviewer found the device technically impressive, and the one use the review names for it is watching a movie on a plane.

Why it matters

  • What it limits constraint The runtime figure Meta gave is a video rating, so a full unplugged day is still an open question. The travel case depends on charging access at the seat or in the bag.
  • What doesn't add up contradiction Meta describes a puck clipped to a pocket or bag; Business Insider reports Meta expects it to sit next to the user.
  • Who has to decide decision With spring 2027 pricing already public, the question for an IT buyer this quarter is whether to fund a pilot before anyone outside Meta has measured the display on text.
  • What it sets up precedent Because the 3D films and live sports land on Quest first, Meta will have real viewing data on the entertainment case before it has to defend the work case at launch.

Whether this works as a work device turns on claims only Meta has published so far. The release lists one large virtual screen or several, any flat surface turned into a keyboard and touchpad, and full-color passthrough that keeps the desk and the phone on it in view [6]. Business Insider's reviewer, who tried the glasses at the conference, wrote about movies, games and hand tracking, and reported that gestures register with the hands resting at a desk, at the side or in the lap, where the Vision Pro wanted them held up [10].

Meta did not publish the puck's weight, so the figure that can be compared across devices is what sits on the face. Against the Vision Pro's 600 grams, these put about a sixth of that on the head [8][20]. The company's other comparison, five times lighter than Quest 3, implies a Quest 3 of roughly 500 grams [1][21].

The battery number is rated on high-resolution video playback, which is not what a full day of documents and calls asks of a machine [16]. On a conventional eight-hour day, three hours a charge needs the puck back on power at least twice [23]. Charging at 45W shortens those stops, where there is a socket [16].

Two years ago, by Business Insider's account, Apple's Vision Pro failed for being too expensive and too heavy, and because "no one could figure out what to do with them" [11]. Meta has answered the first two objections with the price and the face load [4][20]. On the third, the reviewer landed on one group: "I do think there are a number of antisocial coders who might like this," the review said [12].

Disney+ subscribers can stream 3D titles in select countries from November, ESPN's immersive college football runs this year on Quest, and Meta promises more than 100 immersive live sports events a year once the glasses launch [18][19]. Since the glasses go on sale in spring 2027, that catalogue meets its first audience on Quest headsets, roughly four to seven months earlier [22].

Behind all of it is a platform bet: Business Insider notes that Meta has spent tens of billions of dollars on consumer hardware without a mass-market success, and that Zuckerberg wants one of these devices to become the next iPhone, controlled by him instead of Apple or Google [13]. The same review reports that Meta's Muse agent app "appears to be a hit out of the gate", and that the writer has been using it extensively on an iPhone [14].

What to watch

  • Independent measurement of text legibility at 37 pixels per degree on shipping units; for now the claim comes from Meta's release.
  • Whether Meta publishes the puck's weight and a runtime figure measured on productivity use rather than media playback.
  • Whether the $1,300 price and the spring 2027 date hold, and whether the 3D and live-sports catalogue stays available on Quest.
