Xreal's Android XR Aura undercuts Meta's VR Glasses by $20 on the same Qualcomm chip

A reservation holder who opens Xreal's preorder page has one question to settle before paying. The $1,279 Aura comes with 12GB of RAM and 256GB of storage. A version with 16GB and 512GB costs $1,499 ^[4]. Xreal could not tell The Verge by publish time whether the extra RAM would matter for some apps ^[19]. So the buyer is pricing a $220 upgrade without knowing what it buys ^[17].

The $20 gap that frames the launch is about 1.5% of the $1,299 Meta charges for its VR Glasses ^[15][16]. I'd expect few people spending that much on a computer they wear on their face to decide on a gap that size. The hardware gives them little else to tell the two apart. Both weigh around 100 grams, and they stay that light because the Qualcomm Snapdragon Reality Elite chip and the battery sit in a corded compute puck ^[2][5]. Each starts the wearer on a grid of floating app icons ^[11].

The Verge's coverage sets the two up as a head-to-head on price ^[1]. With the same chip in both pucks, what a buyer actually picks is an operating system and the apps that run on it. That means Android apps on the Aura under Android XR, or Quest games on Meta's glasses under Horizon OS ^[5][12].

Nobody has much evidence on that choice yet. The Verge's reporter, who tried both, wrote: "I don't think any journalist can tell you which is better yet; you may want to wait for reviews." ^[7] Android XR also has a short review history at that outlet. Samsung and Google shipped the $1,799 Galaxy XR on it last year but did not send one to The Verge for review ^[8].

For a team deciding whether to pilot either device, I'd lay the decision out as a 2x2 built on two questions. The first is which apps the wearer needs in week one: Android apps or Quest titles. The second is whether the wearer has to see the room through clear lenses, or can work through a camera feed in exchange for more immersion ^[3]. Android apps plus clear lenses points to the Aura. Quest titles plus passthrough points to Meta. Neither product is a clean fit for the two mixed cells, and for those the reporter's advice to wait for reviews applies ^[7]. Price breaks the tie, and on the base models the difference is $20 ^[1].
