Softer CPI could lift Bitcoin to $86,000 or higher, above ETF investors' $84,320 average purchase price, BTSE's Mei says
BTSE's Jeff Mei says Bitcoin could fall below $80,000 on a hot CPI print Wednesday or rebound to $86,000 or higher on a soft one. ViaBTC's Jeff Ko calls the print largely priced in and says his constructive view needs spot ETF flows to recover.

What happened
- The Bureau of Labor Statistics scheduled September CPI for Oct. 14 at 8:30 a.m. Eastern and September PPI for Oct. 15 at the same time.
- U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs lost $484.9 million on Oct. 7, the largest daily withdrawal since June, with IBIT down $207.7 million, FBTC $105.1 million and ARKB $101.7 million, per Farside Investors.
- Bitfinex put weekly ETF inflows at $241.1 million for Sep. 28 to Oct. 2, down from $2.39 billion the week before.
- Ko estimated roughly $800 million of ETF withdrawals last week, while Bitget Wallet's Lacie Zhang cited approximately $681 million.
Why it matters
- Who's exposed exposure Zhang's liquidation zone of $82,000 to $82,500 starts about 0.6% below $83,000, and she warned that losing it could accelerate a fall toward $80,000.
- What it limits constraint Strategy's expected purchases offer only modest support, according to Zhang, because investors already anticipate them, so a bid that moves the price has to come from ETF buyers.
- Who has to decide decision A hot print would challenge Mei's consensus that the Fed skips a second hike, and the Oct. 28 decision lands 14 days after the release.

Bitcoin has lost 2.9% in a week of falling Fed hike oddsConfirmed2 publishers
From the $83,000 where ViaBTC's Jeff Ko said Bitcoin has recovered after losing momentum around Token2049 [1], the two targets are the same distance away: $80,000 is 3.6% below and $86,000 is 3.6% above [28]. The print meant to choose between them is, in Ko's account, largely priced in [4]. He put consensus at 3.6% to 3.7% for headline inflation and 2.4% to 2.5% for core [5], and the gap between the two measures is 1.2 points at both ends of that range [16]. A reading inside the range triggers neither of Mei's scenarios [25]. Ko pointed instead to Thursday's PPI and retail sales and to Treasury yields, citing a slight decline in the 10-year yield to 5.24% [6].
We think the better guide to the upper target is who owns the coins. Bitfinex, using Checkonchain's estimate, put ETF investors' average purchase price at $84,320 [9]. At $83,000 the average holder is about 1.6% under water [17], and $86,000 is 2.0% above breakeven [18]. Bitfinex said investors returning to breakeven could help explain weaker buying [10]. A soft print that lifts the price through $84,320 therefore arrives at the level where, on that reading, buying has already thinned. An average is not a wall, since holders bought across a range of prices, and the estimate rests on one firm citing one data provider.
The flow figures leave little cushion. Weekly inflows fell 89.9% before any money left [19], and the Oct. 7 withdrawal alone equals about 71% of Zhang's weekly outflow estimate [20], assuming it sits inside the week she counts, which the Oct. 14 release date implies.
The counter-case is Ko's. He called funding around 3.2% healthy and leverage contained [11], and said his constructive view would gain support if spot ETF flows recover [12]. If a soft print draws inflows back as the price crosses $84,320, the cost-basis argument is wrong.
The analysts also disagree about oil. Ko attributed the earlier weakness to profit-taking and pressure from higher Treasury yields and oil prices [3]. Zhang took Bitcoin's hold of $80,000 to $84,000 while Brent traded above $100 to $105 as resilience and some separation from geopolitical risk [13]. "Sustained support despite oil spikes is constructive for Bitcoin's near-term trajectory as a digital store of value, although the broader flow picture remains mixed," Zhang said [14].
What to watch
- Daily Farside ETF flows after the Oct. 14 print: inflows returning as the price nears $84,320 would undercut the cost-basis argument.
- Whether Bitcoin holds Zhang's $82,000 to $82,500 zone; a break puts $80,000 in play regardless of the CPI number.
- Oct. 15 PPI and retail sales, the 10-year yield against 5.24%, and the Fed's Oct. 28 decision.
