Bitcoin trades 3.5% below the $84,200 level that would end its run of lower highs

Bitcoin traded around $81,300 on Oct. 16, holding its 50-day average of $81,279 after dipping under $80,000. Trader Ardi says the structure stays bearish until $84,200, 3.5% above that price.

What happened

  • Bitcoin first has to regain $82,000 and hold through the latest daily high near $82,941 before $84,200 comes into view, crypto.news said.
  • On the daily chart Aroon Up reads 0% and Aroon Down 92.86%, so a recent low dominates the 14-session window, according to crypto.news.
  • The weekly chart is firmer, with RSI at 56.39, above the neutral 50 and above its displayed average of 51.80.
  • CoinGlass's one-week heatmap shows a large overhead liquidation cluster around $84,300 to $84,700.
  • Coinglass data cited by Bitcoin News put total crypto liquidations at $290 million on the day, down from $929 million a day earlier.

Why it matters

  • What it limits constraint Ardi's long case waits for $84,200, so a bounce from the 50-day average does not meet his condition for buying.
  • Who's exposed exposure The 200-day average at $72,397 sits 11.0% under the price, so a failure at $79,800 has a long way to fall before it reaches the next trend reference.
  • What doesn't add up contradiction Glassnode treats Thursday's selling near $80,000 as a possible floor while the daily indicators still lean down, and a 50-day average $67 from price cannot settle which is right.
  • Who has to decide decision Waiting for confirmation means giving up the first 3.5% of any move to $84,200; buying the 50-day test means sitting through a possible retest of $79,800.

Bitcoin bounces 3.5% off a $79,694 low as Seoul's chipmakers recover

Three paths are open for the next few sessions, and on distance alone the first two are likelier. Bitcoin can hold the 50-day average and retest $82,000 [10]. It can lose the average, in which case crypto.news says the week's $79,800 low comes back into focus [15]. Or it can clear $84,200 and end the run of lower highs that followed September's advance toward $87,000 [6][11]. We think the third is the least likely this week, and we would be wrong if a daily close above $84,200 arrives before a close below $79,800.

The 50-day average sits about $67 under the price [5], a margin of roughly 0.08% [26], so one candle can carry Bitcoin across it in either direction. The levels that matter are further out. Bitcoin is 1.7% above $80,000 [24] and 3.5% below $84,200 [19], a little over twice as far from the pivot as from the round-number floor [25]. CoinGlass's overhead cluster begins at $84,300, $100 above that pivot [20].

The case that $80,000 held has data behind it. Bitcoin News reported that Glassnode saw sellers capitulate again Thursday, and that earlier bursts of loss-taking coincided with local bottoms in early August, mid-August and mid-September [27]. If the pattern holds, Glassnode suggested, Thursday's selling just above $80,000 could be the local floor [27]. According to Rand Group, the MVRV Momentum Oscillator turned positive and "printed again at $83K," a signal that historically called every previous bitcoin cycle bottom [28]. Bitcoin trades about 2% below that $83,000 level [29].

Ardi's condition is stricter. "Until we break $84.2K, you simply need to respect that the local swing structure is still bearish," he said in an Oct. 16 X post [6]. He said a break above that pivot would prompt him to consider long positions toward the top of the trading range [14]. Analyst Jesse Olson said in his own Oct. 16 post: "BTC remains bearish on the daily chart." [13]

Liquidations fell 69% across crypto, from $929 million to $290 million [16][22], and about 74% for bitcoin alone, from $214 million to just above $56 million [17][23]. Bitcoin News attributed the drop to bitcoin staying largely between $81,500 and $82,500 [18]. A quiet tape would produce those figures with or without a bottom. The same outlet said the slide below $82,000 came with rising oil prices and a sell-off in tech stocks tied to AI hardware and infrastructure [4], and we'd expect a break of $84,200 to need some relief there.

What to watch

  • Whether Bitcoin posts a daily close above the $82,941 daily high and then $84,200, the levels that would end the sequence of lower highs.
  • A daily close under the week's $79,800 low would contradict Glassnode's reading of Thursday's selling as the local floor.
  • Bitcoin News tied the Oct. 16 slide to rising oil prices and a tech sell-off; a reversal in either would change the read on $84,200.
