Universal extends its USDU stablecoin to Solana, with access focused on institutional participants

Universal is extending its USDU stablecoin to Solana, backed 1:1 by dollar reserves with monthly attestations, the issuer says. Access stays with institutions, and the UAE registration behind the token excludes general mainland domestic payments.

What happened

  • Aquanow, Universal's global distributor, will connect eligible institutions and professional participants with USDU across supported markets.
  • Eligible participants will be able to hold and transfer USDU on Solana around the clock, with settlement and treasury management among the intended uses.
  • Universal says USDU is "the first dollar-backed stablecoin registered with the Central Bank of the UAE as a Foreign Payment Token."
  • Inside Abu Dhabi Global Market, Universal Digital Intl Limited is separately regulated to issue a Fiat-Referenced Token to Professional Clients only.
  • A May 7 crypto.news report covered a framework, supported by Al Maryah Community Bank, for converting between USDU and the dirham-backed AE Coin.

Why it matters

  • What it limits constraint Inside the UAE, the disclosures list one permitted use: buying digital assets and digital asset derivatives. A USDU balance on Solana inherits that limit.
  • Who's exposed exposure Monthly publication means 12 attestations a year, so a shortfall opening between reports would not show until the next one and holders rely on the issuer's word in the interval.
  • Who has to decide decision Treasury desks outside the UAE have to confirm their market counts as a permitted international market before holding USDU on Solana.

Solana widens USDU's reach, or rather the number of places it can sit, and leaves the licence where it was. Universal gives the network's transaction speed, low costs and continuous operation as its reasons for the move [10]; none of the three changes what the UAE registration permits. We think the licence sets the ceiling on USDU's user base, and a second chain does not raise it.

Juha Viitala, Universal's senior executive officer, said: "Expanding USDU to Solana brings the reach of regulated, USD-denominated liquidity to one of the most active environments for on-chain payments and financial applications." [9] The reach is to Solana's wallets, platforms and financial applications, where Universal says USDU will become available [12].

Distribution runs through Aquanow, which describes its customers as banks, neobanks, brokerages and payment companies [13]. Its UAE arm is Aquanow ME FZE, regulated by Dubai's Virtual Assets Regulatory Authority [8].

The counter-case is volume. If those customers move USDU onto Solana in size, the ceiling matters less than we expect. The dirham leg is further from done: the companies behind the AE Coin framework named trade finance and multi-currency settlement as potential extensions, not completed launches [15].

The coverage does not include a reserve total, the name of the attesting firm or a Solana supply figure, so the 1:1 claim cannot be sized from it. Everything on reserves is Universal's own description [16].

What to watch

  • The first monthly attestation published after the Solana launch, and whether it shows a reserve total and names the attesting firm.
  • Any widening of the Foreign Payment Token registration beyond purchases of digital assets and derivatives.
  • Whether trade finance and multi-currency settlement on the AE Coin framework move from potential extensions to launches.
