Deutsche Bank puts Bitcoin and Ether custody first and stablecoin conversion later

Deutsche Bank says its first crypto custody service is weeks from launch in Germany, starting with Bitcoin and Ether. The bank's product page lists five tokens, so the gap between a supported asset and a usable service is what clients will meet first.

What happened

  • Corporate bank co-head Gerald Podobnik said stablecoin movement, tokenized deposits and digital securities would follow the initial Bitcoin and Ether custody service.
  • The bank's September release named Bitcoin, Ether, USDC, EURC and EURAU as selected launch assets, and its product page shows all five as supported.
  • As of October 16, the product page still ties availability to regulatory completion and technical readiness.
  • In the interview the bank did not announce a go-live date or identify a first live customer.

Why it matters

  • What it limits constraint According to crypto.news, MiCA Article 75 requires a client custody agreement, position records and a documented safekeeping policy, so opening-day access depends on paperwork client by client as well as on token support.
  • What's now possible capability Institutions can hand wallet and private key management to the bank and skip building a key management system, even if stablecoin conversion is not live on day one.
  • Who has to decide decision A treasury that wants USDC or EURC for payments has to keep its current conversion route until the bank dates stablecoin movement; the public record has no such date.

In crypto.news's account of the Reuters interview, the initial service holds two of the five assets the bank has named, Bitcoin and Ether [16][4]. That is 40% of the list [15]. The other three are USDC and EURC, both Circle's coins, and EURAU, a separate euro stablecoin [8], and each has its own issuer, redemption rules, chains and regulatory status [9].

A bank can hold the key to a token and still decline to approve a particular issuer, chain, counterparty or use for a given customer [10], and nothing on the public record pins down when each stablecoin will go live for an actual client [18]. We think 40% is therefore a better estimate of opening-day scope than the 100% the product page implies. The counter-reading is fair (the page lists all five as supported [4], and a client might be able to deposit a stablecoin on day one with no route to convert it), in which case 40% understates what is usable. We would be wrong if the launch notice dates stablecoin conversion alongside the first Bitcoin deposit.

Even at two assets the bank takes on work. The September release lets a client transfer assets to third parties, and crypto.news says that raises separate approval, screening and destination controls [13]. No retail wallet or public trading app is in the launch plan [11], and an individual Deutsche Bank deposit customer does not automatically get an account that buys Bitcoin [14]. Asian financial centers wait until 2027, after the German launch [3].

What to watch

  • A go-live date or a regulatory completion notice that replaces 'weeks' and the conditions on the product page.
  • The naming of a first live client, which would show the custody agreement and Article 75 records in place for at least one.
  • A dated launch for stablecoin movement, with the issuers and chains the bank approves for USDC, EURC and EURAU.
