A Mac mini price list is mostly a memory price list. Pick the chip, then pick gigabytes of unified memory and gigabytes of storage, and the gap between the cheapest configuration and one that will hold a large local model is almost entirely those two lines. TNW's reading, that a desktop defined largely by how much RAM you buy is exposed to memory pricing in a direct way [18], is the least speculative sentence in any of this week's coverage. The same piece says memory prices have risen sharply and that Apple has already reported component cost pressure [17].
None of the four reports carries a price or a base memory figure [16]. That is the number worth waiting for, because the entry machine will do one of three things: hold its memory at its price, hold the price by trimming the memory, or cost more than the M4 model it replaces [4].
Apple has said it will begin building the mini at its Houston facility later this year, at a site where it says it invested hundreds of millions of dollars in under nine months and already produces AI servers [21][22]. That changes where the machine is assembled, not what the memory inside it costs.
Cook told an April earnings call that the mini and the Mac Studio would need several months to reach supply demand balance, and said the AI craze around the mini had blindsided Apple [7]. Roughly four months later, both went out of stock again [19][24], and Bloomberg's account as relayed by 9to5Mac has deliveries running to weeks or months [8]. The demand side is documented: minis vanished from shelves in February as people built agentic setups [6], and the surge is attributed in part to users running models locally [9]. The supply side is where the two readings diverge, and only one of them gets cheaper once new stock lands.
Gurman has the machine tested with both M5 and M6 silicon [5], reported on 24 August [14], leaving about a week in which it can still be a Cook-era announcement [3][23]. The iMac, by contrast, is reportedly settled on M6 [10], and the high-end M6 is reportedly being skipped in favour of an AI-first M7 [11]. Keeping two chip options warm a week out is what an unfinished bill of materials looks like from outside. Apple does not comment on unreleased products [12], and Gurman's sourcing is unnamed people familiar with a plan that is not public [13].
The mini is simultaneously Apple's cheapest computer and, configured up, a workstation for developers and studios [20]. Which of those two buyers absorbs the memory bill is the thing this launch will disclose, whatever the chip turns out to be.
