KOSPI gave up a 2.57% rally after ASML's outlook and fell for a sixth straight session

Seoul's KOSPI fell 0.44% to 6,008.81 on Oct. 14, its sixth straight daily loss and 14.21% below its Oct. 2 close. Yonhap tied the reversal of a morning gain to ASML, yet that session supplied only 2.7% of the 994.93 points lost.

What happened

  • ASML reported third-quarter revenue of 11.66 billion euros against 11.71 billion expected, according to Seoul Economic Daily.
  • Foreign investors sold a net 1.1831 trillion won of shares, down from 4.5259 trillion the previous day.
  • West Texas Intermediate futures rose to around $95 a barrel after clashes between Saudi Arabia and Yemen's Houthi rebels, adding to inflation worries.

Why it matters

  • Who's exposed exposure Equipment makers carry the visible capex exposure: Hanmi Semiconductor fell 5.02% while Samsung Electronics, an ASML customer, finished unchanged.
  • What it costs cost Domestic institutions absorbed the exit, with their 805.2 billion won of buying covering 68% of the day's foreign selling after 5.709 trillion won left in two sessions.
  • What it limits constraint With oil near $95 and talk of further US tightening, a dovish Fed remark bought only a morning rally.

Yonhap's lede puts the blame on AI spending, but the session's own numbers do little to support that account. The index lost 26.54 points on Oct. 14 [2]. Since its close of 7,003.74 on Oct. 2 it has lost 994.93 [5][14], so the day ASML reported supplied 2.7% of the damage [15]. The 5.46% plunge came the session before [1].

ASML's report erased a morning rally. The index was up 2.57% at 9:34 a.m. after New York Fed President John Williams said he saw no need for further monetary tightening next year [3]. It reached 6,190.65 and then slid to 5,944.65, a 246-point range worth about 4.1% of the close [8][17]. "The KOSPI erased all of its gains after ASML's earnings report," Seo Sang-young, a senior analyst at Mirae Asset Securities, said [23].

The ASML figures are thin for a capex scare. Third-quarter revenue was 11.66 billion euros against 11.71 billion expected [4], a miss of 0.4% [16]. Seoul Economic Daily reports that fourth-quarter guidance beat expectations and that the stock fell 3% to 4% because the improvement was not large enough to justify an already elevated price [21]. Yonhap says the revised 2026 outlook fell short, measured against an 84% yearly rise in the stock [22]. The two accounts disagree on whether guidance missed or beat (they may be describing different periods, and neither says), but both put the share price at the center.

Seo's explanation, as Seoul Economic Daily relays it, was that the issue was less a slowdown in demand for AI chip equipment than earnings and outlook that did not improve enough against a share price that had already run up [24]. We think that is right: a stock up 84% in a year can fall on guidance that is merely good. The counter-case is that a supplier's valuation is a verdict on its customers' spending. ASML sells machines to chipmakers including Samsung Electronics [25], and investors unwilling to pay for ASML's 2026 growth may be pricing what Samsung and its peers will spend.

The chip-share losses were concentrated in a few names. Hanmi Semiconductor, a chip equipment maker, fell 5.02% to 217,500 won and SK hynix fell 1.66% [9]. Samsung rose more than 3% at one point and finished flat at 232,000 won [10].

Foreign investors sold a net 1.1831 trillion won after 4.5259 trillion the day before, or 5.709 trillion over two sessions [6][18]. Institutions bought 805.2 billion won, covering 68% of the day's foreign selling [7][19], and Seoul Economic Daily said that buying cushioned the decline.

The competing explanations are ordinary ones. West Texas Intermediate futures were near $95 a barrel after clashes between Saudi Arabia and Yemen's Houthi rebels, feeding worries about inflation and further US tightening [11]. Top oil refiner SK Innovation rose 4.08% to 163,200 won [12]. We think oil, rates and a stretched ASML valuation explain this session better than a cut in AI budgets. We would be wrong if the index rebounds on a strong TSMC report with oil still near $95, because that puts the weight back on AI sentiment. We would also be wrong if chip shares keep falling after a benign CPI print.

What to watch

  • TSMC's results on the 15th: Daishin's Lee Kyoung-min said they could reverse the weak momentum in AI-related shares. That would shift the weight back to AI sentiment.
  • The September CPI print against oil near $95: a benign number followed by more chip-share losses would favor the capex reading.
  • Whether foreign net selling stays above 1 trillion won after Wednesday's 1.1831 trillion.
