Apple pushes watchOS 27.0.1's restart fix to six older Apple Watch models

Last week an IT lead with a drawer of Series 10 and Series 12 watches could update only the Series 12 units, because watchOS 27.0.1 was out for Series 12 and Ultra 4 alone ^[1]. Apple has now released it for every other watch that runs watchOS 27 ^[2]. MacRumors counts that as Series 9 and later ^[5].

The older watches get the software the newer ones have run since last week ^[8]. Apple's notes still say the update "provides bug fixes for your Apple Watch including fixing an issue where Apple Watch may restart unexpectedly" ^[4]. MacRumors, reading those notes, says it is unclear what exactly the update addresses and that Apple lists no security fixes ^[7]. Eight watch models now run one build ^[14].

The same day brought iOS 27.0.1, iPadOS 27.0.1, visionOS 27.0.1 and macOS 27.0.1 Golden Gate ^[9], plus point releases for the iOS 26, macOS Tahoe and macOS Sequoia lines ^[11]. Counting the watch, that is eight releases ^[13]. One pass across all of them is sensible. The notes argue for putting it in order.

iOS 27.0.1 names a symptom a user would file a ticket about: some iPhone 18 Pro models restarting during Face ID ^[10]. The two reports split on the watch. 9to5Mac describes the updates other than iOS 27.0.1 as carrying additional bug fixes and security improvements ^[6], while MacRumors says Apple lists no security fixes for watchOS 27.0.1 ^[7].

I'd run one pass and sequence it. iPhone 18 Pro units go first wherever users have reported Face ID restarts. Macs, iPads and visionOS devices follow on the normal security schedule. The six older watch models go last ^[12]. The tradeoff is timing. Holding the watches to the end saves a separate rollout, but a watch that has actually been restarting waits behind phone and Mac testing it does not need.

Two tests sort any device in this batch. The first is whether it already runs the fixed build; a Series 12 or Ultra 4 updated last week does, so it gets nothing new ^[15]. The second is whether its release note names a security fix or a symptom your own help desk has logged. That gives four boxes: on the build, skip it; off it with a logged symptom, first in line; off it with listed security content, the normal patch window; off it with neither, last. On the notes Apple has published, the six older watches land in the last box unless your help desk has logged restarts on them ^[7].
