Scaleup Europe Fund leads $100 million into an AI scribe already inside 10,000 clinics
The 5 billion euro fund the European Commission set up and EQT manages has made its first healthcare investment, in a Stockholm company whose three modules each carry Class IIa device certification. The valuation was not disclosed.

What happened
- Tandem Health, a Stockholm company selling clinical documentation AI, raised a $100 million Series B led by the Scaleup Europe Fund that EQT manages, with Kinnevik, Northzone, Amino Collective and Visionaries returning.
- The round is twice the size of the $50 million Series A the company closed in 2025 and takes total funding since 2023 to $160 million.
- It is the first healthtech investment by the 5 billion euro fund, which the European Commission initiated and invested in alongside Novo Holdings, CriteriaCaixa and Santander.
Why it matters
- What doesn't add up contradiction The two accounts of the fund's history do not agree: TechFundingNews calls Tandem the second deal after Lovable, while tech.eu places it after Mistral and Iceye, so the pace at which the 5 billion euro is going out cannot be dated from the record.
- What it limits constraint Any rival that wants to match Tandem's compliance position has to fund three Class IIa certifications plus the German, Spanish and French national schemes before it bills a single note.
- Who has to decide decision European care providers now choose between certified documentation and the cheaper, faster pitch from Nabla and Heidi Health, and whichever way procurement goes sets what Tandem's certification spend was worth.
- What's now possible capability With an EU-anchored fund writing lead cheques at this size, a European scale-up can take growth capital without adding a US lead investor to its register.

Tandem did not disclose the valuation, and neither this round nor the fund's earlier one for Lovable says how much EQT's fund itself wrote [21][28]. TechFundingNews counts Tandem as only the second investment the Scaleup Europe Fund has made, after a $400 million round for Lovable [28]. Add the two and you get $500 million of round value, so even if the fund had supplied every dollar of both, that is a tenth of the 5 billion it is assembling (the target is in euro, the rounds in dollars) [30]. tech.eu tells it differently, placing the Tandem deal after the fund's backing of Mistral and Iceye [29].
What the money is buying is regulatory coverage. The AI scribe, the coding assistant and the clinical decision support are each independently certified as Class IIa devices under the EU Medical Device Regulation, and the company also holds ISO 27001, ISO 13485, ISO 42001, C5 in Germany, ENS High in Spain and HDS in France [12][13]. TechFundingNews describes that process as more rigorous and costly than most competitors undergo [32]. The payroll carries the same shape: about 75 of roughly 170 employees are in-house clinicians, near 44 per cent of headcount [15][14][22].
The competition is priced the other way. Nabla, backed by Cathay Innovation's 1 billion euro AI fund, and Heidi Health, which raised $16 million from LocalGlobe, are both selling into European clinics on speed and low cost [23]. Abridge, the best-funded company in the category, has raised about $780 million at a $5.3 billion valuation, roughly 4.9 times Tandem's total to date, and its product is built for US regulatory and reimbursement conditions [24][27]. "Europe should be setting the standard for how AI enters healthcare, not adopting someone else's," Saari said [17].
Scale here is counted in deployments: 10,000 care organisations across 14 European markets, among them Ramsay Sante, Humanitas and the NHS, with the UK the largest by user numbers [9][10][11]. The $100 million works out at $10,000 of fresh capital per care organisation, and the $160 million raised since 2023 at $16,000 [20]. The company cites peer-reviewed research showing clinicians using Tandem spent 29 per cent less time on admin [31]. "We believe Tandem has the potential to become the foundational AI layer for European healthcare over the coming decades," Nygaard said [18].
The segment forecast has clinical documentation going from $1.05 billion in 2026 to $10.5 billion by 2034, which compounds at about 33 per cent a year for eight years [33][34]. Tandem is already planning past the notes, toward what it calls an AI-native clinic operating system that manages patient flows and runs agents on other clinical tasks [16]. In my view the certification is the asset and the documentation is the entry point; the way that goes wrong is a records vendor giving adequate notes away inside the contract, at which point three Class IIa certificates buy nothing a procurement officer will pay extra for. The WHO expects Europe to be short 1.6 million health and social care workers this year, and 4 million by 2030 [25].
What to watch
- A disclosed cheque size on the fund's next deal would let outsiders track how fast the 5 billion euro is going out.
- Abridge, with about $780 million raised, seeking EU MDR certification or buying a certified European scribe.
- Whether Tandem's next raise arrives with a valuation or a revenue figure attached.
