Solana's Shanghai event stops with officers outside and three China stops still to run

Solana Foundation's Accelerate China event in Shanghai was suspended on October 16 with officers at the venue, the first stop of a four-city tour. No source ties the halt to China's February 2026 crypto notice, and a similar Shenzhen disruption came months before it.

What happened

  • Around noon organizers told attendees the morning program was postponed for venue logistics, without citing a violation, an order from authorities or a new start time.
  • Attendee Olivia, posting on X, said eight or nine officers stood at the Shangri-La Hotel and that some attendees were asked why they had come.
  • Solana's Accelerate APAC event in Shenzhen was cut short in late October 2025 after a police inquiry, according to the South China Morning Post; organizers cited venue capacity.
  • In February 2026 the PBOC and seven other departments reissued the ban on crypto business and extended risk controls to real-world asset tokenization.
  • The tour runs to October 22, and The Crypto Times said it is unclear whether the stops in Hangzhou, Shenzhen and Beijing will go ahead.

Why it matters

  • What it limits constraint Until a regulator or the Foundation gives a reason, the February 2026 notice cannot be named as the cause, and the schedule of the remaining stops is the only evidence that will accumulate.
  • Who has to decide decision The Foundation has to decide whether to hold public events in Hangzhou, Shenzhen and Beijing, with Shenzhen the city where its 2025 event was cut short.
  • Who's exposed exposure Attendees were exposed as well as organizers, and some were asked why they had come. Registering for the next stops is now a personal risk judgement.

The dates complicate any link to the February 2026 notice. Solana's Shenzhen event was cut short in late October 2025 [5], roughly three to four months before the PBOC and seven other departments issued the revised notice [16]. The September 2021 ban on virtual-currency business, covering trading, token issuance and derivatives, was already in force when police visited Shenzhen [6]. Shenzhen's organizers blamed venue capacity [5]. Shanghai's blamed venue logistics [9].

Binance co-founder Changpeng Zhao, who a day earlier had called it "amazing" that Solana had secured an office and advertising in China [8], wrote on X: "Sad to see. Looks like they really didn't know the local policies? But it's not the first time either, same thing happened less than a year ago." [4] He did not offer evidence for why Friday's event was stopped, crypto.news reported [11]. The Solana Foundation had issued no statement at the time The Crypto Times wrote [17].

If the other three stops [13] run as scheduled, the Shanghai episode looks local, which fits The Crypto Times account that enforcement against gatherings varies by city and is often triggered by local complaints or the perceived scale of an event [18]. If they are cancelled or moved in quick succession, a wider instruction becomes the likelier explanation, though that would still not show the February notice was the instrument. If a regulator or the Foundation states a reason, the question closes whichever way it points. We lean to the first outcome, because the tour's agenda is technology and the Shenzhen precedent was handled at city level [3][5]. Officers were present and attendees were questioned [2].

The money side is thin: the reporting gives no cost for the Shanghai office Solana opened or the advertising it ran across the city's skyline [8]. Meanwhile the Hong Kong route is moving: the second spot Solana ETF listed there on October 13 [14], and Joseph Chee, chief executive of Solana Company, said earlier this month that a managed reopening of mainland access could trigger another crypto supercycle [15]. No reopening has been announced [15]. Until one is, mainland spending covers developer events and an office, and the listed product sits in Hong Kong.

We would change our view if an authority cites the notice, or if Hangzhou, Shenzhen and Beijing are all stopped within the October 16 to 22 window [3].

What to watch

  • Whether the Hangzhou, Shenzhen and Beijing events open on schedule between now and October 22.
  • Any statement from the Solana Foundation or Chinese authorities that gives a reason, especially one citing the February 2026 notice.
  • Whether a revised Shanghai schedule reaches registered attendees by email or Luma notification.
