Nvidia lines up a further $2 billion of European AI deals after $8 billion in a year

Nvidia expects to unveil $2 billion of European AI deals within a week, on top of $8 billion over the past year, Jensen Huang said in Paris. The four Paris stakes came without disclosed terms, so the $10 billion cannot be sorted into equity and other money.

What happened

  • Paris was the first stop on a tour that will also take Huang to London and Berlin.
  • He also announced new funding for four French startups: Doctolib, Genesis AI, Pigment and Entalpic.
  • The four work in healthcare scheduling, robotics, business planning software and materials research.
  • Doctolib was valued at 3.6 billion euros in a secondary share sale earlier this year, against 5.8 billion euros in its 2022 equity raise, according to Bloomberg.
  • Last month Huang forecast that Nvidia will sell twice as many chips next year as this year, citing AI investment across industries and countries.

Why it matters

  • What doesn't add up contradiction The two publishers use different verbs for the same money: qz.com has $8 billion deployed and $2 billion of deals, Cryptobriefing has $8 billion invested and $2 billion of investments. Equity stakes and purchase commitments are different kinds of obligation, so the two should not be added together.
  • Who's exposed exposure The Doctolib terms were not disclosed, so either outcome is open: if Nvidia's price sits near the secondary sale, it bought roughly 38% below the 2022 round; if it paid the 2022 mark, it paid about 61% more than the current secondary valuation.
  • What it limits constraint The sovereignty case for open models runs into an objection critics in Europe already raise: selling the chips behind those models means more data centers, and they already cite data center energy demand.

Eight billion dollars deployed plus the $2 billion expected makes $10 billion [11], and the new tranche is 25% of the trailing year (or rather, of what Nvidia says it deployed, a narrower claim) [12]. A quarter added within a week [1], at the opening of a three-city tour [7], is either an acceleration or a bunching of announcements around the itinerary.

Huang's route for Europe is open models. "Open models are important as they can be customized for languages and for your own sovereignty," he said, according to Bloomberg [5]. The argument is about weights, and weights have to be trained. Nvidia is a partner to Mistral AI, which designs open-weight models, and Mistral's latest was trained on 4,000 Grace Blackwell chips [6].

The $10 billion can be read as placement of scarce supply, as seeding of the investment Huang's own forecast needs, or, for some part of it, as purchase agreements counted as deals. We think the placement reading fits the evidence best. Nvidia has projected revenue growth of 70% in its next fiscal year, with the possibility of doubling if supply could meet demand [14], and a seller that says supply is the limit is not obviously using this money to find buyers. The one non-cash term reported is Nvidia's commitment to help Doctolib train AI models, according to Cryptobriefing [4].

The second reading is the serious counter. Huang pointed to AI investment across industries and countries as the driver of the doubling in chip sales he forecast last month [13], and a supply-limited seller can still rationally pay to keep that investment coming. The third reading would show up in London and Berlin, where a list made mostly of supply agreements instead of equity would mean the $2 billion measures orders.

We would drop the placement reading if the London and Berlin list is mostly supply agreements, or if the week ends short of the $2 billion Huang described [1].

What to watch

  • The London and Berlin announcements: whether the $2 billion arrives as equity stakes or as supply agreements.
  • Whether the total reaches $2 billion within a week of the October 13 Paris announcement, the window Huang gave.
  • Any disclosure of the Doctolib stake price against the 3.6 billion euro secondary-sale valuation.
