Microsoft puts a 16GB floor under the 12-inch Surface Pro for $150 more

The second-generation tablet moves to Qualcomm's six-core Snapdragon X2 Plus with a cellular option and a brighter screen, and it now starts at $1,150. The keyboard and Slim Pen are still sold separately.

What happened

  • The second-generation Surface Pro 12-inch drops the original Snapdragon X for the Snapdragon X2 Plus, Qualcomm's six-core part positioned below the X2 Elite.
  • The tablet costs $1,150, which is $150 above the previous model's launch price and at least $350 below the latest 13-inch Surface Pro.
  • The Surface Laptop 13-inch uses the same Snapdragon X2 Plus at $1,200, and all the new Surface hardware goes on sale Oct. 13.

Why it matters

  • What it costs cost The memory floor is paid for in the starting price: a hundred seats now runs $115,000 against $100,000 at the old launch price, and that is before a single keyboard or pen is added.
  • Who has to decide decision With the Laptop 13-inch only $50 dearer and a keyboard still to buy for the tablet, the small Pro is the cheaper choice only for roles that genuinely need the detachable.
  • What's now possible capability A cellular configuration, new this generation, lets IT issue the small Surface to people who work away from managed Wi-Fi.
  • What it limits constraint Six midrange cores cap what any role on this hardware can be asked to do, and Gizmodo's own caveat is that it may fall short of Intel and Apple M6 machines.

Windows Central rates the Surface Laptop Ultra a MacBook Pro rival with gaps at launch

Confirmed2 publishers

A 12-inch Surface Pro arrives as a tablet. The keyboard and the Slim Pen are separate purchases [5], so $1,150 is where a fleet quote starts [20]. Gizmodo lists $1,150 for the tablet and $80 for the new Surface Mouse [14]. The keyboard, the Slim Pen and a separate 5G configuration go unpriced.

Back the $150 out and the previous generation launched at $1,000 [21]. That is a 15 percent increase [22]. On a hundred-seat order it is $115,000 instead of $100,000 [23]. The extra $150 buys a 16GB floor: every base unit has 16GB and 256GB of storage [3], and there is no 8GB option on the sheet for a spreadsheet to pick by accident [4].

Microsoft, in Gizmodo's reading, obviously wants both the keyboard and the pen used with the convertible design [11]. Buying the Slim Pen also turns on Ink Canvas, a new app built for the stylus that handles notes and can use AI to summarize text [13]. Price the device the way that user receives it and the internal comparison moves. The Surface Laptop 13-inch runs the same Snapdragon X2 Plus at $1,200 [10], $50 above the tablet before its keyboard goes in the cart [18].

The performance number on offer is a graphics one. Gizmodo reports the X2 Plus is supposed to deliver 60 percent better graphics than the first generation [12], and adds that it may still not match machines with Intel or Apple's latest M6 silicon [24]. For most of a general fleet the graphics gain is not what decides the purchase; six midrange cores [2] are the ceiling for every role you put on this hardware.

The mouse is the odd line item. It is $80, and the left and right clicks are haptic: the button registers the capacitive touch of a finger, then fires a vibration as force feedback [14]. For a control pressed thousands of times a day that removes moving parts that eventually fail [25]. Logitech makes the same argument for the haptic clicks on its G Pro Superstrike X2 and X3, where users set the depth at which the input registers [26]. There is also a dedicated button for talking to Copilot in its consolidated app [15].

It settles per role. Some users work where there is no Wi-Fi; some type on the device all day. For the first group, 5G is the small Pro's one advantage over the Laptop 13-inch, and this is the first 12-inch version Microsoft will build with it [6], on a screen now rated at 500 nits [8]. For the second, the keyboard goes in the order, and the machine you are then comparing against is a 13-inch Surface Pro starting no lower than $1,500 [19].

What to watch

  • List prices for the keyboard, the Slim Pen and any separate 5G configuration. Those prices decide the real per-seat cost.
  • Whether the launch prices hold through the quarter; Gizmodo questions how long Microsoft can keep PC prices stable with memory costs rising.
  • Whether the Surface Mouse ships with a usable charging port placement, and whether IT can disable its Copilot button.
