Meta gave Muse Charm its own 5G modem so its AI agent can work without Wi-Fi
Meta's new pocket device opens its Muse agent with one tap and reaches the network over a 5G modem of its own. The modem is what lets an assistant stop inheriting Apple's and Google's app rules.

What happened
- Zuckerberg took repeated digs at Apple at Meta Connect before revealing Muse Charm, a pocket-watch-sized device that opens Meta's Muse agent on a tap and bypasses the AI apps on a user's smartphone.
- He said Meta has shifted its focus to building devices for personal superintelligence, the goal he now puts ahead of the metaverse bet that prompted the 2021 name change.
- The device has a roughly 2-inch screen that can be navigated with a thumb, with a customizable Muse character at its centre.
- Muse itself has drawn millions of downloads, in what some analysts have called the biggest US app launch since ChatGPT arrived in November 2022.
- Investors bid up Muse partners such as Shopify and sold Booking and Intuit, the companies they see as exposed to agent automation.
Why it matters
- What's now possible capability Because the device answers over its own 5G link, Meta's assistant can reach a user with no app-store review and no operating-system permission prompt anywhere in the path.
- What it limits constraint Teams building assistant experiences cannot yet evaluate Charm as a target, because Meta has not published an SDK for it, so the new endpoint has one tenant.
- Who's exposed exposure Intuit and Booking are now judged against an agent whose owner controls the hardware it arrives on, and their exposure widens each time Meta adds a task the market has already priced.
- What doesn't add up contradiction Meta plans to put Muse across its smart glasses lineup, while IDC's Jitesh Ubrani locates Charm's appeal with people who will not wear glasses or do not trust them, so the lineup courts opposite preferences.

Meta builds a camera keychain for Muse, its chart-topping AI agentConfirmed14 publishers
The 5G modem changes the architecture. The published report says the built-in modem gives access to Muse even without Wi-Fi, and that the device cannot make calls [4]. An assistant that ships as an app inherits its host operating system: background execution limits, microphone permission prompts, store review. A device with its own radio inherits none of that. Meta has spent years trying to get out from under Apple's and Google's operating systems with a platform of its own [6].
What exists in public is one wire story's worth of specification. The Ukrainian outlet mezha.net credits Reuters for its version [10], and both published accounts carry the same screen size, the same modem and the same tap gesture, so every figure in circulation traces to a single report [18]. Meta did not disclose a price or an availability date [17]. Until there is an SDK, I would treat Charm as one endpoint with one tenant.
IDC director Jitesh Ubrani said of the device: "They might be able to run a small language model locally. So you can run AI on such a small package" [15]. The local-model idea is Ubrani's inference from the form factor. It decides the failure mode. If the model runs in the cloud, every tap is a round trip, and cellular coverage becomes a hard product requirement.
The nearest precedent is Rabbit R1, the handheld generative AI device from Rabbit Inc with a screen and a button, which had a buzzy launch in early 2024 and then flopped; the same account attributes the flop to overpromising on AI features and delivering an unreliable experience [13]. Meta's investor case for Muse is automation of tasks ranging from booking flights to filing taxes [12]. Those are jobs where the user can see whether the agent finished.
Linda Sui, founder of the market research firm Smart Analytics Global, is cautious on volume. "I would be cautious about its mass-market potential," Sui said. "Unless Muse Charm can offer unique functions that smartphones, watches, earbuds or smart glasses cannot easily replace, it is more likely to remain a nice-to-have device for early adopters than become a mainstream product" [16].
What to watch
- A published SDK or agent API for Charm, which would turn a single-tenant endpoint into something a third party can ship to.
- Whether Meta states what runs on the device, and how Muse behaves when the 5G link is unavailable.
- A price, a ship date, and who pays for the modem's data.

Mark Zuckerberg took repeated digs at Apple during Meta's annual event on Wednesday, then revealed a pocket-watch-sized device, called Muse Charm, that carries Meta's Muse AI agent into the real world.
- [2]
Users can tap the Muse Charm gadget to access Muse directly, bypassing AI apps on smartphones.
- [3]
Muse Charm features a roughly 2-inch (5-cm) screen that can be navigated with a thumb, with a customizable Muse character at its centre.
- [4]
A built-in 5G modem allows access to Muse even without Wi-Fi, though the device cannot make calls.

Muse has drawn millions of downloads in what some analysts have said could be the biggest app launch in the US since ChatGPT arrived in November 2022.

Meta has long sought to escape Apple and Google's operating systems with a platform of its own.

"It is actually quite clear personal superintelligence will not only come first; it will be much bigger and more important," Zuckerberg said at the company's annual Meta Connect conference.
- [8]
"So we have shifted our focus to building the best devices for personal superintelligence," Zuckerberg said, adding that Muse would also soon be available across Meta's smart glasses lineup.
- [9]
Zuckerberg once championed the metaverse, which inspired the company's name change in 2021, as the next computing platform; he now sees personal superintelligence as the bigger and more immediate breakthrough after that costly wager failed.

mezha.net credits Reuters as the source of its report on Muse Charm.

Investors lifted shares of Muse partners such as Shopify while dumping companies seen as vulnerable to disruption, including online travel agency Booking and TurboTax software creator Intuit.

Investors have embraced Muse's potential to automate tasks ranging from booking flights to filing taxes.

Neither published account gives a price, an availability date, or any developer program for third-party software on Muse Charm.
- [18]
The two published accounts of Muse Charm report identical device details (tap-to-open Muse, roughly 2-inch thumb-navigated screen with customisable character, built-in 5G modem, no calling), and one of them credits Reuters, so the specifications in circulation come from a single wire report.

Gen Z consumers, aged about 14 to 29, treat AI assistants as companions or brainstorming partners rather than simply search tools.
