MacPaw ships Eney, a Mac assistant that prepares next steps and waits for approval

MacPaw launched Eney for Mac and iPhone, an assistant that says it spots what needs attention and asks for approval before it acts. 9to5Mac credits local models now capable of complex tasks, though demanding work still goes to the cloud.

Eney's more demanding tasks rely on cloud models Who Eney reaches and how: the user approving its steps, its model partner, cloud models and its in-development memory, per MacPaw and 9to5Mac.

The user approves the next step Eney prepares, MacPaw says. Liquid AI works with MacPaw on custom models for Apple hardware. More demanding tasks rely on cloud models. Mnemos memory, still in development, is limited to Eney's own memories.

What happened

  • Eney began in 2019 as an idea for driving MacPaw's CleanMyMac with natural-language commands, according to CEO Oleksandr Kosovan.
  • The Eney Wand opens when a user shakes the cursor over text or presses Option + W, and a double-tap of Option brings up Eney from anywhere.
  • MacPaw is working with Liquid AI on custom models optimized for Apple hardware, and Eney draws on both local and cloud models.
  • Mnemos, the memory system, is still in development and for now only manages Eney's own memories, without independently reading other apps.

Why it matters

  • What it limits constraint The only account of Eney in use is one writer's demo session with MacPaw's CEO, so nothing independent yet tests the pitch.
  • Who's exposed exposure Any task that reaches a cloud model sends its inputs off the Mac, so a security reviewer cannot yet sort files and calendar content by where they are processed.
  • What doesn't add up contradiction MacPaw pitches machine-wide context, but the memory layer ships limited to Eney's own memories, so the personalization half of the pitch is not yet cross-app.

Copy a paragraph, switch to a chat window, paste it, ask the question, copy the answer back. The 9to5Mac writer calls that routine one of the main pain points he has with most AI tools, and says Eney's system-wide integration lets him point at something on his screen and ask the assistant to work with it [12]. It is the most concrete feature in the report.

The proactive half is described by MacPaw. The company said Eney "spots what needs attention before you do", with examples such as a call about to start and a disk running out of space [3]. MacPaw said Eney "puts it in front of you for approval" [4]. In our view that approval step is right for a tool that reads files and calendars, though each suggestion still costs the user a decision.

The local-model case rests on the writer's statement that local models can now handle increasingly complex tasks that not long ago needed much larger cloud-based models [13]. 9to5Mac did not publish a benchmark for that claim or any usage figures. The data worth asking MacPaw for is the share of suggested steps users approve and how many people are still using Eney weeks after install.

Mnemos, as designed, builds a knowledge graph of people, projects, preferences and events and tracks how that information changes over time [6]. It stores and processes memories locally on the Mac, and it separates what the user stated from what Eney retrieved from connected sources and what it inferred from past interactions [7]. That split is what an administrator would want to inspect when Eney gets something wrong.

For Monday, we'd sort every Eney task on two questions. Who starts it: the user, as with the cursor shake, or Eney, as with a low-disk warning. Where it runs: a local model or a cloud model. The Wand is user-started [5], but whether its requests stay on the Mac is a question for MacPaw.

We'd pilot the user-started tasks first with a small group, and move Eney-started tasks in only once MacPaw says in writing which of them reach a cloud model. The tradeoff is that the Wand is the least proactive part of the product, so that pilot tests the copy-and-paste fix and says little about whether anyone wants unprompted suggestions.

What to watch

  • MacPaw publishing which Eney tasks run on local models, which go to the cloud, and where an Eney Wand request is processed.
  • Mnemos gaining independent access to information in other apps, which is not part of the launch.
  • Any figures on how often users approve Eney's suggested steps and how many are still using it weeks after install.
