Lotte Shopping's department store coupon cap tops the 93,800 won price of the share that earns it

Lotte Shopping will give holders of even one share coupons for 10% to 20% off and points of 1% to 3% from Nov. 1, the company said. It tests whether larger Korean retailers will court individual shareholders with discounts, a practice so far mostly confined to small and midsize companies.

The coupon rate sets the spend to reach the cap Lotte Department Store's coupon discount cap, the spending that reaches it at each end of the coupon's discount range.

Key figures: the Lotte Department Store coupon discount is capped at 100,000 won; reaching the cap takes 500,000 won of spending at a 20% discount, or 1,000,000 won at a 10% discount; the coupon offers a discount of at least 10 percent, up to 20 percent.

What happened

  • Holders of 1,000 or more shares for over a year, about the top 1%, also get department store lounge access, valet and parking services, and discount or free-delivery coupons at Lotte's other formats.
  • The coupon works, within set limits, at Lotte Department Store, Lotte Mart, Lotte Super and the Lotte On e-commerce platform.
  • Benefits go out every three months to holders on the shareholder registry, and the first round covers holders of record at the end of September.
  • Korean programs so far come mostly from small and midsize companies: Otoki offers a 20% coupon, Samjin Amook 10%, and d'Alba Global opened a shareholders-only store in August.
  • In Japan, Daiwa Group found that 83.7% of listed food companies and 80.1% of listed retailers offer shopping perks to shareholders.

Why it matters

  • What it costs cost The bill falls on store margins and grows with the number of holders who shop; none of the three reports gives a cost estimate or a count of eligible shareholders.
  • What it limits constraint A buyer who acts on the announcement misses the first round and, holding through year-end, collects from Feb. 1, so the cheapest entry comes with a holding period and a wait.
  • What it sets up precedent As the first major Korean company to run one, Lotte will produce the first register data from a large issuer on whether shopping discounts add individual holders.
  • What doesn't add up contradiction Japan's adoption rate depends on who counts: Daiwa Group puts it at 41.2% of listed companies and the Japan Securities Dealers Association at about 34%, a gap of roughly 7 points.

Start with the coupon against the stock that earns it. Lotte Shopping closed at 93,800 won on Tuesday [12], and the department store discount is capped at 100,000 won [11], so the ceiling on one coupon sits 6,200 won above the price of a share [17]. Reaching that ceiling takes 500,000 won of spending at a 20% discount and 1 million won at 10% [18], and the coupon is granted once, when a holder first joins [2].

The points schedule runs on spending, not on the size of the holding. Purchases of 1 million, 2 million and 3 million won earn an extra 1%, 2% and 3% in L.Point [3], and a holder of a single share qualifies for that range [9], so a 3% rate on 3 million won is 90,000 won [16]. AEON, which has run its program since 1985, ties a 1% to 7% return to the number of shares held [15]. At Lotte the holding starts to matter at 1,000 shares, which cost 93.8 million won at Tuesday's close [19].

An industry official quoted by en.sedaily.com said: "There are even shareholders who buy a single share just to use the discount store, so the promotional effect is real and it gives companies a way to expand their touchpoints with consumers." [23] Lotte Shopping stressed something else. "The program is intended to go beyond our existing dividend-focused shareholder return policy, diversify the ways we reward shareholders and strengthen our partnership with them," a company representative said [7]. By that wording the program sits on top of the dividend policy.

The near-term outcome is either a coupon trade, with holders collecting the one-time grant and selling after a record date, or a durable register. We think the first is likelier, because a benefit worth up to about one share price rewards buying ahead of a quarter-end record date [6] more than it rewards holding. The counter-case is Japan, where 73.3% of listed companies with programs said individual shareholders had increased [14]. Those are companies reporting on their own programs, and 35.2% said long-term shareholders had increased [14].

We would be wrong if the register shows individual holders rising after the Feb. 1 distribution [6] and still present at the next quarter-end.

What to watch

  • Lotte Shopping's count of individual shareholders at the end-2026 record date, against the end-September base, once the Feb. 1 distribution is out.
  • Whether Lotte discloses how many holders redeem the one-time coupon or what the program costs in discounts.
  • Whether larger Korean food and consumer goods companies announce programs of their own after Lotte.
