LG Electronics' third-quarter profit miss comes almost entirely from margin
LG Electronics put third-quarter operating profit at 781.8 billion won, up 13.5% on the year and 17% below consensus. Sales came within 2% of forecasts, so almost all of the miss sits in an operating margin about 0.7 points thinner than analysts modelled.

What happened
- Preliminary consolidated revenue rose 8.9% from a year earlier to 23.827 trillion won.
- According to Sedaily, analysts surveyed over the past month had forecast 24.26 trillion won in revenue and 975.8 billion won in operating profit.
- Net profit for the quarter was not immediately available alongside the preliminary estimate.
Why it matters
- What doesn't add up contradiction Yonhap Infomax and the survey Sedaily cited differ on consensus by 34 billion won, putting the miss at 17% or nearly 20%, but on either figure the profit gap is about ten times the revenue gap.
- Who has to decide decision Analysts resetting fourth-quarter estimates have more to fix in their margin assumptions than in their sales assumptions, because this quarter's sales call was close.
- What it limits constraint Until LG publishes profit by business, there is no way to check against the numbers whether appliances and auto parts buckled under the Middle East war.

September retail sales growth drops from 0.8% to 0.2% without gas stationsConfirmed4 publishers
Measured against the survey Sedaily cited [8], revenue fell short by 434 billion won, or 1.8% [10]. Operating profit fell short by 194 billion won, close to 20% [11]. Analysts had modelled an operating margin of about 4.0% [17]. LG delivered about 3.3% [18]. Apply the expected margin to the sales LG actually booked and the quarter would have produced about 958 billion won. That leaves roughly 17 billion won of the gap from lower sales and about 177 billion won, or 91%, from the thinner margin [19].
The forecast looked plausible, or at least plausible if you expected the margin to jump. Working back from the growth rates, LG earned about 689 billion won on roughly 21.88 trillion won of sales a year earlier [12][13], a margin near 3.1% [14]. Analysts were pricing almost a full point of expansion. LG delivered about a tenth of a point [15]. That was still enough for profit to grow faster than sales, and Yonhap reported that profitability improved significantly from a year earlier [3].
LG raised the Middle East war itself. "Despite unfavorable conditions, including the war in the Middle East, our core businesses maintained their strong market positions and continued to grow sales based on differentiated product competitiveness," the company said [6]. The statement defends sales and market position, and on sales the numbers back it up [10]. The preliminary figures are consolidated only [2][7], so the margin shortfall cannot yet be pinned to a business.
Two readings fit the numbers. In the first, segment results show home appliances and vehicle components below their own margin forecasts. That would mean the war took profit out of the units LG calls its cash cows [5], and analysts were too generous about how well those units would hold up. In the second, those two units met forecast and the shortfall sits elsewhere. That could be in TV, in smaller businesses, or in costs booked outside the segments. LG said TV profitability improved on a year earlier [5], but improving on last year is a lower bar than beating an estimate.
LG's statement points toward the second reading, since it credits appliances and vehicle components with carrying the quarter [5]. But that is the company's own account, published before any segment figures. I think the claim the numbers support today is narrower: analysts overestimated how much of LG's sales growth would reach operating profit. The case against appliances and vehicle components fails if their segment margins come in at or above what analysts modelled for them.
What to watch
- Segment operating profit in LG's full third-quarter results, to locate the margin shortfall among appliances, vehicle components and TV.
- Fourth-quarter consensus: whether analysts cut margin assumptions toward the 3.3% LG just delivered or keep pricing a return near 4%.
- Whether LG's commentary on the full results ties any margin pressure from the Middle East war to a specific business line.
