Apple prices the iPhone Duo's crease-hiding screen layer as a $19 AppleCare+ swap

If the iPhone Duo ages like other foldables, the complaint will come some months in. The owner opens the phone under office lighting, and the line down the middle of the inner screen is easier to see than it was in the store. 9to5mac wrote that foldable displays tend to show a more visible crease over time ^[6]. The pitch, in 9to5mac's phrasing, is a "day one" type experience for years ^[12]. What Apple has actually done is narrower and easier to plan around. The top film on the folding screen now has a line of its own on Apple's list of AppleCare estimated service costs ^[3].

Kate Bergeron, Apple's vice president of hardware engineering, explained the part in a TikTok interview with creator Angelica Siciliani Fendi ^[1][4]. "The matte display coating does a really nice job of, I'll say minimizing the crease. But there's a cover layer on top, and we've done a significant amount of engineering work to help that wear in as long of a manner as we can, and to make sure that you get the most out of that layer's performance. It's actually replaceable, which is a really nice thing for the customer, that you can peel off that layer and get a new one," she said ^[2].

That quote describes two parts. The coating minimizes the crease, and the cover layer on top is the part that wears ^[2]. MacRumors calls the replaceable part a nano-texture cover layer above the inner display that helps hide the crease ^[4][5]. A swap renews the film that does the hiding. Calling the crease itself replaceable goes a step further than Bergeron did.

Her verb was "peel." MacRumors expects official replacement to be limited to Apple Stores and Apple Authorized Service Providers, and said it was unclear whether owners could easily remove the layer themselves ^[14]. The interview describes a user pulling off a worn film. The price list describes a service visit ^[3]. How owners actually handle a worn layer will be clear only after the phone ships ^[10].

With AppleCare+, the US swap price is $19 ^[8], about 0.95% of the $2,000-plus price 9to5mac cited ^[13]. Apple has posted that price only for covered phones ^[7]. For a fleet buyer, the AppleCare+ decision is now also a decision about how the inner screen will look later in the phone's life.
