Citadel Securities pledged a 2-year Treasury that BNY had tokenized and settled within minutes

BNY says its overnight repo with Citadel Securities is the first on a major triparty platform to use a tokenized asset as collateral. The evidence of use so far is a single trade whose size BNY did not disclose.

BNY ran the ledger, triparty platform and cash leg How the overnight repo reached Citadel Securities and BNY, as BNY describes it, and what BNY aims for with settlement hours next year.

Citadel Securities bought a 2-year Treasury via BNY on Tradeweb and pledged the token for an overnight repo against BNY cash. BNY recorded it on its ledger, ran triparty, says it skipped T+1, kept the value undisclosed and aims for longer settlement hours next year.

What happened

  • Citadel Securities bought the 2-year note through BNY on Tradeweb, and BNY recorded a tokenized version of it on its private ledger.
  • Citadel then pledged the token as collateral for an overnight repo, with BNY providing the cash.
  • BNY said the trade covered execution, settlement and collateral financing without the security passing through the usual T+1 settlement cycle.
  • BNY aims to extend its traditional settlement hours to reach European and Asian trading hours next year.

Why it matters

  • What it limits constraint BNY ran the ledger, the triparty service and the cash leg, so the trade tested one institution's stack end to end; whether another custodian or dealer would accept the same token is not shown.
  • Who has to decide decision Collateral managers on BNY's triparty service can plan around longer conventional hours next year. In CoinDesk's account, BNY has not given dates for its digital cash and tokenized deposit plans.
  • What doesn't add up contradiction crypto.news headlines the trade a landmark and CoinDesk headlines it a test; one overnight repo of undisclosed size fits the second label better.

IMF puts tokenized repo at $300 billion to $350 billion a day

The "first" is BNY's own description [4]. It shows only that a tokenized Treasury can be financed inside an established triparty process. How often anyone will do it is a separate question.

The counter-thesis has weight. BNY is the world's largest custody bank [14], and its transfer agency business managed about $8.6 trillion across 7.6 million investor accounts, according to the July report crypto.news cited [13]. In July the bank also introduced a blockchain-based version of that service, initially to support tokenized funds from Baillie Gifford, BlackRock and BNY Dreyfus [12].

The timing comparison is one day against one day (or rather, one business day against one night, which end on the same day). Standard Treasury settlement takes the next business day [9], and an overnight repo is a one-night loan [2], so on the conventional cycle a note bought today would settle about when a loan against it fell due [15]. Settlement within minutes [1] closes that gap on paper.

"Efficient movement of high-quality collateral is fundamental to well-functioning markets," said Dan Doherty, digital assets operations lead at Citadel Securities [10]. CoinDesk framed the payoff as potential: firms might reuse collateral sooner and free up cash for other trades [11].

We would be wrong if this stays a single trade. A second counterparty would be the first evidence against that reading, and a repeat on collateral other than a 2-year note the second.

What to watch

  • Whether BNY discloses the value, rate or cash amount of this trade, or any volume of tokenized repo after it.
  • Whether the European and Asian hours extension for Fed-eligible securities and U.S. triparty arrives next year, as BNY aims.
  • Whether BNY puts dates on its digital cash and tokenized deposit services.
