Apple's 200 cuts read as a roadmap: gaming and immersive video have no 2027 product

Bloomberg says 100 roles went from Vision Pro and 100 from Siri and software. Both cuts land on work the next two products do not need.

What happened

  • Bloomberg's Mark Gurman reported Apple has cut more than 200 jobs across its Vision Pro and Siri teams as it turns toward smart glasses and new AI work.
  • Inside the headset group, the gaming team is largely being shut down and the immersive video production team is being scaled back.
  • The Siri reductions fall on staff working on the old assistant, which the new system requires different expertise to build.

Why it matters

  • What it limits constraint Outside studios are now expected to fund 3D shoots that Apple stopped funding on cost grounds, without hardware margin to recover the spend from.
  • Who has to decide decision Anyone with a visionOS gaming or immersive video pipeline is now planning against a model that is only under consideration for as early as the end of 2028.
  • What it sets up precedent Defunding the legacy assistant sets the expectation that new capability lands only on the rebuilt architecture, and the old stack gets kept alive rather than improved.
  • What doesn't add up contradiction Engadget reads the 2028 headset as something Apple still plans; 9to5Mac says it is still being considered. Plan and consideration are different commitments to build against.

Apple funded immersive video for the same reason console makers fund launch titles: to make expensive hardware worth owning. According to the reporting summarised by The Next Web, each 3D production needed several crews of employees and contractors, an episode of an immersive series could cost several million dollars, and the audience was small [12]. MacRumors puts the same conclusion more bluntly: the shoots were not cost-effective because so few people actively use the device [13].

The stated fix is fewer videos made in-house and encouragement for third parties to fill the gap [4]. The subsidy logic does not transfer. An outside studio spending millions on a 3D shoot has no hardware margin to recover it against, and it would be selling into the same installed base that broke Apple's own arithmetic. Handing off a line item because it lost money is not the same as making it profitable for somebody else.

The price context sharpens it. A Vision Pro costs $3,699 [20]. Meta's own-brand glasses launched at $299 [16], made with the Franco-Italian eyewear group EssilorLuxottica [17], which works out to roughly 12 pairs of the competition per headset [21].

The Siri half is a different mechanism with the same tell. The cuts land on people working on the old version of the assistant [5], because the new Siri AI runs on a revamped technical architecture that changes the expertise the team needs, so roles were removed and others created around it [6]. Engadget notes the LLM-based Siri arrived with iOS 27 [7]. Apple's Intelligent Systems Experience team is caught in the same reorganisation [18]. Read as staffing, that is a legacy stack moving to maintenance. Read as a roadmap, it says where features will and will not land.

The tally has been moving faster than the analysis. Earlier accounts this week put the Vision cuts at about 60 people [19]; Bloomberg's number is more than 200 across several teams [1], split about evenly between the headset group and Siri and software [2]. Around it, the VP who ran Vision Pro left for OpenAI [22], staff have been pulled off the headset to work on the rumoured AR glasses [23], and four frame designs have been in testing [15].

Apple's language is careful: it will create new roles while affecting "a limited number of existing roles" [8], all in service of evolving the business [9]. What the product mix actually says is narrower. The glasses expected in 2027 will not support 3D gaming or video [14]. The two units cut hardest are the two things that device cannot do, and the next hardware that could host them is a model still under consideration for as early as the end of 2028 [10].

What to watch

  • Whether any third-party studio commits real money to immersive Vision Pro content now that Apple has cut its own slate back.
  • Whether the 2027 glasses date holds, and which of the four tested frame designs actually ships.
  • Whether the end-of-2028 Vision Pro moves from under consideration to a committed product, or quietly stops appearing in the reporting.
